Hello viewers!
Well, you asked for it, so here it is: The Open Thread of Ideas.
Use it as a place to present us your ideas on where you would like to see this blog head, or use it as a place to tell us about your favorite films you've seen or whatnot.
Think of this as an "Off-Topic" thread, too. Introduce yourself, tell us how your life is going, etc. We take interest in what our viewers are like.
Awesome! Comment away!
Woot Woot! It actually made it.
ReplyDeleteHere are some suggestions for reviewing:
The Other Guys
Dinner For Schumucks
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Future ones (that haven't been released yet)
Vampires suck
The Social Network
Jackass 3-D
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn treader
Transformers 3
Pirates of tbe Caribbean: On stranger Tides
Footloose (or the older version would be cool also)
- Hope you can review some...thanks for adding the open thread!
The only film you suggested that I actually am looking forward to is David Fincher's The Social Network. Expect to hear some news in the future, as well as a review.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could be more excited about Dawn Treader, but with the way the Narnia films have been handled thus far, it isn't safe to get one's hopes up too high.
Dinner for Schmucks is a (poor) remake of the French film The Dinner Game which I hear is rather funny. I wish to review the latter film and ignore the former one.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice ಠ_ಠ
alright. Social Network looked very different yet in a semi good way. The narnia's seem to have been going downhill since the first one. I suggested dinner for schmucks because i think that the review would be rather interesting. with some positive as well as some strange negativity.
ReplyDeleteI love your blog guys! And I'm doing fine, thanks. Upcoming events that might inspire you: the Meanwhile Movies series at the Wealthy Street Theater; currently showing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And there are always interesting films showing at the UICA downtown. Did I mention the Michigan Film Festival in GR this November?
ReplyDeleteQuestion: what did you all think of the music in Inception? Some claim that all Hanz Zimmer did was mess with the music from the Edith Piaf song that formed the "kick" signal. Hmmm.
Ugh. I hate how Blogger comment don't allow you to directly reply to another commenter!
ReplyDeleteMark: Yes, expect much more information on the upcoming release of The Social Network. I was hesitant to like it, until I saw that Fincher was directing. Now, I think I am way too excited about it! As for your other suggestions... well, we may review them, but they will most likely end up in the "Dislike" pile. Sorry...
Steve/ Mr. Matheson: Thanks for the tip! The other bloggers here will get a chance to do all the local stuff come fall, but I'm leaving MI :(
And about Hanz Zimmer's score, musicians and composers "copy" each other frequently. Zimmer pretty much copies from his own stuff, but I'm not going to lie to you, the tease of Edith Piaf is kinda cool! Personally, I am a fan of Hanz Zimmer's music.
ok. thats fine. social network was my main focus also. you really don't have to review any of them, that is why they are suggestions. but, best of luck!
ReplyDeleteTo Mr. Matheson: Yeah, I pretty much agree with Peter. Zimmer plagiarizes his own work regularly (e.g. Gladiator vs. Pirates), but he's good enough that I generally don't mind. As for his tease of Edith Piaf, I don't even care. The music kept me on the edge of my seat, and I can listen to it (and enjoy it) outside of the movie. That's pretty much all I ever ask for in a soundtrack.
ReplyDeleteOh, I loved the Inception music, though it wasn't as varied as Pirates or Gladiator. I thought the Piaf motif trick was very cool. And guys if you want a better commenting system, try Disqus. It gives you a lot more control over spamming and trolling, and you can have threaded discussions. Commenters can even edit their comments. I use it on my blog and it's a godsend.
ReplyDeleteAnd please address me by my name, Mssrs. Schipper and Orlebeke. That'd be Steve, or Stephen if you want to get formal.
ReplyDeleteYou have great ideas.
ReplyDeleteI'll check it out, Peter, I have some extra time.
Haha. Thanks Mr. Mathe-, er, Steve for the idea.
ReplyDeleteSure, Ben, check it out. I'm curious if it's allowed on Blogger, though.
I know it can be done in WordPress, but I'm not sure it's native with Blogger.
Another reason I hate "templated" platforms. Aaahh! I want more freedom!
Alright. I found it, put it on the site, checked it out a bit, and liked it. The only problem is that you have to comment with either a Disqus, OpenID, Yahoo, or... something else account. Not Blogger, is the point. The system works fine, but no one could use their Blogger account to post. So I uninstalled it until we could talk about it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it gets rid of all the current comments. Thankfully, they came back once I got rid of it.
Oh! That's why the site totally blew up on me!
ReplyDeleteI was freaking out for a couple of seconds.
(Also, this not being able to just text this stuff sucks...)
suggestions..

louloubelle: thank you for the suggestions!
ReplyDeleteTo Everyone: Don't be afraid to email us asking if you would want to be a guest writer. If you have a review ready to go, and if we like it, we'll post it!
Guys, my blog is on Blogger and I installed Disqus with no problem at all. All my previous comments (about 3 years' worth) are still there. And you can require simply a verified email address for commenting. On my blog, I don't even require that; I just pay close attention to the comments and immediately block ("blacklist") spammers. Plus I close comments on posts more than 30 days old. Give it another look, dudes.
ReplyDeleteMr. Matheson/ Steve: Hmmmmm... we will have to look into this a bit more... perhaps you could help us with it via Joseph or when Ben is over at your house.
ReplyDeleteAnd could you send us a link to your blog? I'm curious to see it!
My main blog is Quintessence of Dust and I also write occasionally at ThinkChristian and most recently at the Panda's Thumb. I will say that if I had to start all over I'm not sure I'd opt for Blogger. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteQuick Question to everyone: how many Open Threads like this do you want? Once a week? Once a month?
ReplyDeleteJust curious.
I would say once a week. considering there are already 20 comments on here. also the regular viewers will probably still continue to comment often
ReplyDelete- the anonymous option is available again. i would advise removing it...
My bad. I had to disable it to put in Disqus. It's back on now.
ReplyDeletei wrote a review on Law Abiding Citizen awhile back for IMDB, would you like me to revise it and email to you?
ReplyDeleteMark: Sure! very cool. You can send it on over whenever your ready!
ReplyDeleteBen: oh Ben... ;)
alright. i sent it
ReplyDeletespider man
ReplyDeletelouloubelle: yes, those 3 films are something we will definitely look into reviewing.
ReplyDeleteKeep the suggestions coming!
And the Open Thread has gone so well, it will be sticking around. (yay!)
An Open Thread will be posted once a week, probably every Tuesday.
would somebody like to give me a suggestion for one to review. i am considering zombieland, but was wondering anyone wanted me to try to review something different.
ReplyDeleteMark: write a review on anything you would like. we'll let you know if we "approve" it or not.
ReplyDeleteok. will do

ReplyDeleteDo whatever you see that you think will work. If you think it makes sense to review the trilogy as a whole, do that. If you think that it would make more sense to review individual films in that trilogy, do that instead.
ReplyDeletedon't worry. i wasn't even considering that one
ReplyDeleteBecause now we can reply!
ReplyDeleteAnd do other stuff easier, like monitor (black listing will be fun!) and all that jazz.
I think the comments will come back in a few days...? But I'm not entirely sure.
Very sorry about any inconvenience, Mark!
Let me append this: As long as it isn't Lord of the Rings. I have dibs on that.
ReplyDeleteok, i dig. haha ya have fun with the black listing part. don't worry. once i created another account i was fine. the "like" and "reply" are very handy
ReplyDeleteQuite handy, and I think the previous comments will show up in the near future. Some of them are here, but most are not. Sorry again.
ReplyDeletecan we write a review on like a trilogy. and recap and review the trilogy as a whole, not necessarily each individual movie?
ReplyDeleteim not hatin or anything. but why did you change commenting software thing
